236th Battalion
Fredericton New Brunswick
Officer's Highland Tunic

236th Battalion "New Brunswick Kilties" Fredericton New Brunswick, Officers Highland grouping of Captain Joe McPeake. The tunic is a cuff ranked highland tunic for the rank of Captain. The kilt is the correct Maclean tartan complete with Maclean Officers Sporran.

The tunic has a unique story. While attending an estate sale in Fredericton N.B., I inquired about any 1st war items and was led up to the roof of the coach house. In the back of the attic, covered in bird and mouse droppings, was an old suitcase. Expecting the worst, I opened the trunk and was amazed to find a complete Captains highland uniform grouping for Fredericton's 236 Battalion "The New Brunswick Kilties" all dated 1916. All in absolutely perfect condition.
Joseph Patrick McPeake was born in Fredericton NB on 06 Aug 1879. He was a member of the Canadian Militia and joined the 236 Battalion in 1916. In 1916 Joe sailed to the UK and joined the staff of the 3rd Infantry Brigade HQ where he served as a Paymaster in the Royal Canadian Pay Corps. After the war, he served for over 40 years as a court reporter in the New Brunswick Supreme Court. On 15 July 1963 Joe McPeake died peacefully at age 84 in his home at 57 Rookwood Ave Fredericton.

The tunic has brass 236th Bn collar badges. Buttons are the brass Canadian Militia pattern.

I obtained this grouping in 1997. After enjoying it for 9 years, when taking these updated photos in 2006 I felt something in the front watch pocket pouch. I reached inside and was flabbergasted to pull out an issued watch.
The Maclean Officers 236th Battalion "New Brunswick Kilties" Sporran. Of note, the Sporran is the correct Officer's pattern for the 236 Bn, being a Maclean Officers Sporran without a 236 cap badge.

Captain Joe McPeake's grouping consists of his cuff ranked 236th Infantry Battalion highland tunic, Maclean kilt, officer's Glengarry for the 236th Infantry Battalion, Maclean officers sporran, Sam Browne belt, spats, and Maclean tartan socks.
