Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regt. Nr.17
Private Purchase Krätzchen

Eigentumsstück (private purchase) Krätzchen from Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regt. Nr.17. The black top with red band and yellow piping was adopted by Husaren-Regt. Nr.17 in 1886. This cap is superbly made and manufactured from the highest quality doeskin wool. In this pattern and quality, probably c. 1910 -1914. Externally the Krätzchen is absolutely flawless. No holes, fading, moth, wear or damage.
A close up of the Eigentumsstück (private purchase) "small eye" pattern Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regt. Nr.17 Totenkopf and Kokarden. The Regiment received the Totenkopf in 1883.

The Regiment received the blue and gold Braunschweig Kokarde in 1897. Prior to this date, the Regiment wore the Preußen Kokarde.

A side profile showing the high sides and wide overhang typical of a high-quality Eigentumsstück (private purchase) Krätzchen.
The inside of the Schirmmütze reveals a silk liner with Alkor sweatband which shows quite a bit of age crackling.

The top of the liner has the owner's initial "S" and a Freiherr crown printed in black ink.
The five points to the crown on the lining indicate the Krätzchen was owned by a young Freiherr (Baron), who would have been the son of a Fuerst (Duke).
A fine period photograph of a Husar from Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regt. Nr.17 wearing an Eigentumsstück (private purchase) Krätzchen.

This Husar wears the issue pattern Totenkopf, but the Krätzchen is clearly Eigentumsstück.
