Model 1895 Sachsen (Saxony)
Kgl. Sächs. 2. Husaren-Regt. Nr.19 Pelzmütze

Model 1895 Sachsen (Saxony) issued Husaren Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Pelzmütze (Busby) for Kgl. Sächs. 2. Husaren-Regt. Nr.19 (Grimma) XIX Armee Korps. In 1876 Kgl.Sächs. Sachsen Reiter Regiments 1 & 2 became Kgl. Sächs. Husaren-Regts Nr.18 & 19 and exchanged their Model 1867 Sachsen Reiter Raupenhelm for Pelzmützen.

The Pelzmütze is made from seal hide and remains in superb condition. On this issued Pelzmütze the natural black seal hide was used and was not dyed black, so there is a very slight shade of brown to the hair. The Model 1891 posts for the chinscales are correctly curved for Mounted-Troops and correctly backed with leather washers. This Pelzmütze was first accpeted by the XIX Armee Korps Bekleidungsamt (clothing depot) in 1884, then updated with M91 posts and chinscales sometime after 1894, and then finally updated with the unique Sachsen Husaren chinscales some time after 1904.

A view of the Sachsen Wappen (front plate) with the distinctive star-burst with a center shield. This Wappen is made from Tombak with a nickel-silver center which is typical for Sachsen Wappen. It measures only 82mm compared to the larger Infantry Line Wappen at 104mm. A 1904 directive from the Sachsen (Saxon) War Ministry directed that the chinscales on Sachsen Pelzmützen would no longer have the male/female brad and hole to secure the brass chinscales, and would from that point on only have rounded ends. This example has the rounded ends unique only to Sachsen Pelzmützen.

The Weinrotes (wine red) Kolpak (wool bag) which hangs on the left side of the Pelzmütze was only worn by two Sachsen (Saxony) regiments: Husaren Regt Nr. 18 and 19. Kgl. Sächs. 3. Husaren-Regt. Nr.20 wore a light blue Kolpak.

The original Fangschnur (lanyard) is correctly attached and looped with a toggle.
Note the Sachsen pattern rounded Reich's Kokarde.

The liner of issued M1891 Pelzmütze were very distinctive being heavy leather with pointed "tongues" perforated at the ends for a leather string to adjust the fit. This unique pattern of liner was used for issue helmets for the entire life of the Pelzmütze from 1850 to 1915. Note that the cloth owner's tag prior to it being issued to Husar Hammerdörfer has been scraped off.

The Pelzmütze body is a very tight seal hide stretched over a frame of cane on the upper half and of corrugated stiffened burlap on the lower half (as worn).

No other Wappen will fit the two holes in the body; only a Sachsen 82mm Wappen will fit.
