8,8 cm SK L/35
On Pommern there were eighteen 8,8 guns for close-in defense. Four were housed in the sponsons on each side of the bow, two were housed in the sponsons at the stern, and twelve were on the boat deck on the Aufbau (superstructure). The guns in the hull sponsons were all behind armoured shields on the sponsons, so I only had to build the 12 that were visible on the upper decks.

Two of these twelve were behind a shield built into the front of the boat deck on either side of the forward 17cm gun casemates, but the other ten were exposed. The four at the rear are completely open and exposed, so they had to be best of the 12. The 8,8cm guns were going to be difficult, as not only are they tiny, but all twelve had to be identical. Many references claim that the Deutschland class had a vertical dropping breech block, however photos show clearly that it was a sliding block breech block.

For the gun base, a plug was made complete with the mounting bolts, and breech assembly masters so they could be cast as a single unit. The main parts to a gun: base, breech assembly, gun sight, and mounting bracket to the gun shield were all placed in a mold box so they could be cast together.
