Much Better
Once cleaned up, I re-glued the casemate plates on with the corrected bend and then it was back to puddy, sanding, primer, puddy, sanding, primer, over and over to get back to where I was. But now they looked like they should.

Final Preparation
Finally, the hull was sprayed with several coats of sandable primer. The entire surface was the then sanded with 220 and then 330 sandpaper, and finally smoothed with 0000 steel wool. This gave me a hard, smooth surface to paint.
