Fabric from a German Observation Balloon. The 62mm X 31mm fabric is a fine dark rubberized linen. It is stapled to a card which states " Fragment of outer fabric German Observation Baloon (sic) shot down France Ach (sic) (Oct?) 1917". Observation Balloons would often break away from their tethers during high winds and drift towards or over the front lines where they would naturally be shot down.
