NCOs (Non Commissioned Officers) in the Imperial German Army were divided into two specific groups: |
- NCOs with the Officer's sword knot; or
- NCOs without the Officer's sword knot;

In addition to the NCO ranks above, there were two more categories of NCO rank that should be mentioned. All NCOs in this category were expected to purchases and wear an officer quality helmet:: |
- NCOs in an officer's appointment (1914 to 1918 only); and.
- Fähnrich (Officer-Candidate NCO).

The Fähnrich or Officer-Candidate wore the insignia of the Unteroffizier and was permitted to wear the Officers' sword knot, but wore an issue Kokarde. They were considered senior in rank to Sergeants. After passing the Officers' examination they were authorized to wear the officers' side arms and wear an officer's Kokarde. They then ranked senior to the Vize-Feldwebel.
