Kommandoturm Error Disaster number two. I was looking at period photos of Pommern and discovered that there was in fact, no entrance structure behind the Kommandoturm. Great; all that work for nothing. So I popped it off and naturally it took a big chunk of the back of the Kommandoturm with it. This photo shows the Kommandoturm under repair and the offending structure removed. |

Too Many Holes? NOOOOO! Disaster number three. Before painting I sat down with all my period photos
and compared each part of the Aufbau. When the lower part of the Aufbau was made, I had used the Deutschland shipyard drawings. Comparing it now to actual Pommern photos, I discovered that I had 12 portholes where there should not be portholes, and it was missing 4 portholes. No point in complaining, just fix it. All 12 excess portholes were filled using body putty by filling and flattening with clear plastic. Then back to sanding, priming, sanding........

NOW am I Ready?
I have done everything possible to ensure this is the most accurate representation of the unique SMS Pommern Aufbau (suerstructure) that could be made. Finally I feel comfortable and ready to paint. |

The day of Reckoning; Paint. I decided to paint the deck color first which on Imperial German war ships, was a wine-red linoleum. I was unable to find a decent semi-gloss color as paint seems to be either high-gloss for cars or flat for military, so I ended up using Floquil train paint; ATSF Mineral Brown. It was flat, so I had to cover it in several coats of gloss so decals would stick to it. | | |
