Mast Beams
On the top of both masts were ][ (I-shaped) steel beams (two per side) that were straight on the top, tapered at both ends on the bottom, with four square holes on the front and three square holes on the back, and in 1:100 they are only 80mm long. Could they be more complicated??

New Knowledge about the Deutschland Klasse Ships
While I was examining a photograph of Pommern steaming under the Die Rendsburger Hochbrücke, I noticed something very surprising; the top section of masts have been lowered down to the platform at the top of the centre mast to enable the ship to steam under the bridge. This was fascinating, as I had no idea the top masts could be lowered. This photo was taken after 1909, as Pommern has the Kaiserliche Werft Kiel modernization of the front funnel increased 2 meters in height for the funnel searchlight platforms.

Making Beams
I could not use a commercial modeling beam as they are straight and would not have the correct taper, and I would never be able to cut perfectly square holes, so I had to make them. Each beam was made from 12 separate pieces of styrene plastic, 10 pieces for the part of the beam that shows vertically, two pieces for the top and bottom of the beam.
