Power Tools; An Investment Before attempting to build this model, an investment had to be made in
tools. Although I had several of the required tools, I made sure I had the following before proceeding: a drill press, bandsaw, table saw, miter saw, table sander, mini table sander, table grinder, and the hand tools, a jigsaw and drill. A most useful tool to acquire would have been a lathe, but I am not prepared to spend the money to buy one, so I would need to find other ways to accomplish what a lathe can do. More on that agony later.

What I Wanted The SMS Pommern was one of the five Deutschland-Klasse battleships built between 1903 and 1906. Three of the Deutschland-Klasse survived the war and were heavily modified in the 1920s and 30s, so it was critical that I obtain plans for the first version.

What I Got I thought it would be simple matter to locate and order Deutschland-klasse plans in 1:100 scale for this project. I was wrong. After considerable effort I finally located a set of plans from VTH (Verlag für Technik und Handwerk) for what was described as the "1903" SMS Schlesien, which was one of the five Deutschland battleships. This should have been my first clue that something was wrong, as the SMS Schlesien was not launched until 1906. When the plans arrived, I was extremely disappointed to discover that they were not for the 1st War three-funnel version, but for the heavily modified 1928 version with two funnels. |
